Michael is TRYING to convince himself that this will not be the end of the world. I'm not sure he believes himself, truth be told.

You'll note he didn't even TRY to put the hood back up. In the book it explains eloquently why, essentially, high school is a gossip farm and the news would make it to his class even if he did, so why bother. It won't change whatever happens this point forward.

Artistically? I'm glad to have him out of the hood... it was a hard bit of clothing for me to tackle page to page. But I'm sure Michael would have been happy to have me keep hiding his face with it!
